Best-selling author Marie Forleo said, “Success doesn’t come from what you occasionally do. It comes from what you consistently do.”

How consistent are you with your workout routine? The answer to this question is vital to your health and wellness. Movement is one of our fundamentals of life. It assists with many aspects of your physical and mental well-being, such as building immunity and decreasing your chances for disease. Consistency of movement is also important, as it helps maintain overall wellness and success.

This past May, the Slainte Fitness team encouraged our members to participate in a mile per day challenge, which promoted that idea of consistency of movement. This challenge was simple, and the goal was direct: Complete at least 20 minutes of movement (or one mile) daily. Carving out 1.39% of your day may not sound like a lot, but at the end of the month those small steps add up to 620 minutes of movement. By the end of the month, most participants actually increased their movement beyond what was required. Why? Many of them found that the first step of the workout was the hardest part, but once they started moving they were able to build momentum.

Regardless of whether you commit to the mile per day challenge or another goal, it’s important to remember that success comes when you make a commitment a priority. You have to choose to take the necessary action each day toward achieving that goal. When you decide there is nothing that will get in your way — not a feeling, not an obstacle and certainly not doubt — you can succeed.

Consistency means showing up when …

  • The sun is shining and when it’s cloudy and raining
  • You can see your finish line clearly and when you are miles away
  • You have motivation and when you don’t
  • You are at your highest high and when you are feeling low
  • It’s easy and when it’s hard
  • You think you can and when you think you can’t

Make the commitment to consistency, and watch the rest fall into place.
