COVID-19 has forced individuals and businesses to adapt to unfamiliar routines on what has felt like a daily basis. Nonprofit organizations, like most other businesses, entered 2020 with plans to maintain and expand their operations. Any proper business model would be prepared for minor losses, but no one could have predicted the nation’s shutdown.

While times of crisis understandably cause an interruption in operations for most businesses, nonprofit organizations have maintained — and even exceeded — their regular demands and tasks. It is even plausible to start up a nonprofit now despite the shaky economy. According to Nonprofit Quarterly, during the last recession, “far from reducing the number of nonprofits in the world, the downturn may have increased their number.”

On the social service end of the sector, millions have turned to food banks and soup kitchens for nourishment (New York Times), counseling for mental health concerns (Yahoo! News), and shelters if they have nowhere else to turn (New York Times). Whether in person or entirely online, worship services continue nationwide (NPR). Charities and business associations, such as foundations, chambers of commerce and membership groups, hardly missed a beat in their everyday operations. Even Parent Teacher Organizations endure despite an uncertain school schedule (PTO Today).

Nonprofit organizations thriving during this time can still find themselves liable for claims that include:

  • Bodily injury
  • Physical and sexual abuse
  • Contract violations
  • Breach of duty
  • Discrimination
  • Misappropriation of funds
  • Defense costs
