Professional Associations: A New Way to Sell Insurance

Today’s small-business professionals may find it easy to join associations made up of other professionals in their industry. These associations allow members to support and learn from one another and gain a competitive advantage.

In associations, members share new industry trends, advances in technology, success stories for selling products, ideas for growth and more. Benefits of joining professional associations can be endless, but the most prevalent include continuing education, networking opportunities, access to resources and professional development.

According to the Directory of Associations, there are over 38,000 professional associations today. Some of these include the United States Disc Jockey Association, the National Tutoring Association, the National Dance Teachers Association of America, the National Association of Certified Public Bookkeepers and the National Speakers Association.

As insurance professionals, we can use associations to our advantage. By joining groups like the American Insurance Association (AIA), the American Association of Managing General Agents (AAMGA) and the CPCU Society, we can learn about trends in the insurance industry and gain knowledge that can help us be better salespeople and provide the right coverage to insureds.

We also look for creative and innovative ways to grow our books of business and sell more insurance. Sometimes the best way to accomplish both is to target specific groups of individuals, and we can do so by joining associations related to their industries.

As an example, imagine you are an insurance professional looking to grow your book of business, and you also have a side job as a photographer. To further your photography skills, you join a professional association. As a member of this group, you can communicate with many other photographers, sharing not only tips about photography, but also knowledge of their insurance needs. Whether you’re presenting in front of a group of photographers at a seminar or sending an email to some of the association members, you can bring value and peace of mind all while growing your book of business.
