The food industry is growing rapidly throughout the U.S. Many people dream of opening their own restaurant to serve their creative dishes to the public, and one way these self-starters achieve their goal is by first opening a food truck or serving food from a cart.

In fact, the value of the U.S. food truck industry is expected to reach almost $1 billion by the year 2020, according to Statista.

Starting a successful mobile food business requires establishing a customer base. What better way to establish loyal customers than to serve them at their favorite hangout spots? Whether it’s selling hot dogs from a cart at a local baseball game or setting up a taco truck at a concert, these new ventures are more popular than ever.

The characteristics prevalent to these unique exposures require careful risk management. Although mobile food businesses do not have the traditional brick and mortar risk exposure, there are many other important factors for your insureds to consider when starting a stand or a food truck.

  • A vending cart was put away for the evening. The next day, the owner discovered the cart had been stolen during the night. The owner had to spend $15,000 on a new cart and equipment.
  • A customer bought a hot dog from a stand. While eating the hot dog, the customer chipped a tooth on something hard inside the hot dog and incurred $700 in medical expenses and $6,000 in corrective dental expenses.
