Nonprofits Need Protection, Too
More and more Americans are calling on their inner hero and involving themselves in charity or volunteer groups, such as booster clubs, membership organizations, foundations, or professional/trade organizations, among others. Individuals and families want to support causes that are near and dear to their hearts, and associations that reflect their own interests. Volunteering in these types of groups gives people a sense of purpose and fulfillment, benefits special interest groups and plays a significant role in growing communities.
Reductions in funding and budget cuts have greatly impacted nonprofits across the country. As one example, school programs such as arts, music, and even sports face elimination; caring parents have found ways to support those programs with the creation of booster clubs. A recent analysis from the National School Board Association (NSBA) shows that most schools depend entirely on booster clubs alone, and some schools are only able to offer activities that the booster club can support independently. The number of booster clubs will continue to expand as they act as a safety net for these schools in need.
In addition to relying on volunteerism, these groups strongly depend on events for fundraising purposes, as well as through promotion, raffles, and concessions. These are simple and enjoyable ways to involve the community while raising funds and awareness. While these operations and activities are relatively low-hazard, they can present a number of exposures. These small groups can find themselves liable for claims that include but are not limited to:
- Bodily injury
- Misappropriation of funds
- Breach of fiduciary duty
- Defense costs
These already small organizations need protection, but the dilemma lies in the ability to afford multiple policies to address these concerns. Our Charity Protector and Business Association Guard products include a variety of insurance and value-added solutions for these organizations, and we offer new minimum premiums starting at $395. Our comprehensive package policy offers:
- General liability
- Directors and officers
- Employment practices
- Hired and non-owned auto
